When the flowers began to bloom
And all the ways I held you close
You whispered sugary sweetness
The warmth of your breath coating my ear
Like fog on a windshield

When the heat of the day was almost too much to take
We knew we’d be burned
But the tension only pulled us closer
You were the well I came to
I was the water that filled you

When our leaves turned to brass
The talk was crisp
But the colors were bright
They spoke highly of our last hurrah
But those colors eventually fall

When everything we’d grown together was covered in frost
Everything was fresh and white
But you had no heat left to give
The shivers down my spine turned to ice
And our words did bite

But still
After all this time
You are the one
I remember
